Staff Software Engineer, AI Agent Orchestration

Vancouver, BCApply now

Asana is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help define and build our AI Agent Orchestration platform. This is a greenfield opportunity to shape how enterprises collaborate with AI agents – leveraging Asana's decade of expertise helping humans work together to create seamless human/AI collaboration at scale.

You'll own the technical direction for systems that manage agent lifecycle, state persistence, and coordination across complex enterprise workflows. Working at the intersection of distributed systems and emerging AI protocols, you'll architect the foundation that enables AI agents to operate with full organizational context while meeting enterprise requirements for reliability and compliance.

This role requires someone who thrives in ambiguity, can drive alignment across teams, and is energized by defining the patterns others will build on.

About Asana AI

Asana AI is the company's number one priority. We're building the future of human/AI collaboration – going beyond chatbots to integrate AI into everyday workflows for some of the biggest companies on the planet.

Asana's AI Teammates deliver a secure, multi-player, enterprise-grade agentic experience. They're transforming Asana from a place where work is tracked to a place where work gets done. AI Studio, our no-code rules automation platform, enables teams to design and deploy AI agents directly within their workflows.

Our AI teams move quickly, with a track record of successful launches, and we're just getting started. If you believe in the potential of AI to make us more creative, effective, and fulfilled in our work, we'd love for you to join us.

About the team

AI Agent Orchestration is a new team building on Asana AI's foundation. We're tackling hard problems: How do you maintain coherent state across multi-turn agent interactions? How do you route between specialized sub-agents while preserving context? How do you ensure AI agents can access company knowledge while meeting enterprise security requirements?

We're small, fast-moving, and directly shaping Asana's AI platform strategy.

This role is based in our Vancouver office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams with which you partner. If you're interviewing for this role, your recruiter will share more about the in-office requirements.

What You'll Achieve:

  • Define the technical architecture for our agent orchestration platform, making decisions that will shape the system for years.
  • Build and scale distributed systems that handle complex state management, dynamic routing, and high-volume agent interactions.
  • Drive alignment across AI teams on shared infrastructure, APIs, and patterns for agent development.
  • Champion reliability and observability practices that ensure our agents meet enterprise SLAs.
  • Mentor engineers on the team and across the organization, raising the bar for AI systems engineering.
  • Partner with Product and Design to translate ambiguous product requirements into technical solutions.
  • Represent Asana's technical perspective in partnerships with LLM providers and emerging AI ecosystem players.

About You:

  • Have 8+ years of software engineering experience, with significant time spent on distributed systems at scale.
  • Have built and operated high-availability services handling complex, stateful workloads.
  • Bring strong instincts for enterprise security and compliance – you think about data governance and access control as foundational, not afterthoughts.
  • Have a track record of setting technical direction and driving alignment across multiple teams.
  • Are comfortable with deep ambiguity and can make progress on problems where the solution space is undefined.
  • Communicate clearly and build trust with engineering, product, and design partners.
  • Experience with ML/AI systems in production, particularly moving beyond demos to reliable, impact-driven deployments.
  • Familiarity with agent orchestration patterns: context storage, multi-turn state, dynamic routing between specialized agents.
  • Understanding of emerging protocols (e.g., MCP, A2A) for standardizing how agents interact with tools and each other.

At Asana, we're committed to building teams that include a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills, as this is critical to helping us achieve our mission. If you're interested in this role and don't meet every listed requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
