We’re hiring a Principal Engineer into our Enterprise team to lead cross-organizational initiatives to enable Asana to scale to our largest enterprise customers, including user and data administration, billing systems, API frameworks, and permissions and sharing models. We focus on building these enterprise-scale capabilities while preserving the craft and user delight that defines a consumer-grade product experience. Our work directly impacts how the world's largest organizations leverage Asana to transform their productivity and achieve ambitious goals, ensuring that powerful enterprise functionality doesn't compromise the intuitive, beautiful experiences that make Asana special.

This role is based in our San Francisco office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams with which you partner. If you're interviewing for this role, your recruiter will share more about the in-office requirements.

What you’ll achieve:

  • Shape the technical strategy and decision-making across the Enterprise team, and ensure alignment with business objectives and cross-team collaboration.
  • Mentor and grow multiple senior engineers through individual coaching and technical workshops, helping them develop skills in technical strategy, system design, and decision-making.
  • Tackle complex technical challenges spanning multiple programs, particularly in areas like permissions architecture, compliance systems, data administration, and design scalable solutions.
  • Partner closely with Product and Design leaders to ensure technical considerations like performance, scalability, and engineering velocity are thoughtfully integrated into product decisions.
  • Champion technical excellence and best practices across the Enterprise team, evolving principles, patterns, and processes to help teams ship quickly while maintaining high standards and consumer-grade user experience quality.
  • Handle technical escalations involving senior leadership, facilitate resolutions for complex disagreements and technical trade-offs impacting multiple teams or long-term architecture.
  • Design system boundaries and ownership models empowering team autonomy while ensuring cohesive technical architecture across enterprise-focused features and infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with external partners including strategic vendors, enterprise customers, and technical partners, representing Asana's technical capabilities while building valuable relationships.

About you:

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong track record of leading technical strategy in complex, multi-team environments, preferably in enterprise software or B2B SaaS (or equivalent experience in related technical leadership roles).
  • You enjoy mentoring and developing others, and have demonstrated success helping senior engineers grow into technical leaders and expand their scope and impact.
  • Strong expertise in several areas of scalable system architecture, such as multi-tenancy, complex permissions systems, compliance frameworks, user and data administration, API design, billing platforms, or enterprise security models.
  • You thrive in collaborative environments and have experience partnering closely with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders to balance technical and business considerations.
  • You successfully navigate complex technical discussions with multiple senior stakeholders, using strong communication skills to facilitate decision-making and build consensus.
  • You understand enterprise platform challenges such as complex permissions and access control systems, compliance features and requirements, user administration at scale, data governance and administration, API frameworks, or scaling consumer-grade user experiences to enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and leverage them to enhance productivity, collaboration, or decision-making
  • Experience identifying and solving systemic technical problems impacting multiple teams, with experience in areas like technical debt management, architectural evolution, or cross-team coordination.
  • You connect technical work to business impact with the ability to communicate technical strategy to non-technical leadership and understand how engineering decisions drive business outcomes.
