## On this Earth Day, Asana is going carbon neutral

At Asana, our mission is to help humanity thrive by enabling all teams to work together effortlessly. This of course drives how we build our product and company culture, but it also goes beyond that. For us, helping humanity thrive also means taking full responsibility for our daily impact on the environment.

This Earth Day, we’re excited to share that we’ve taken steps to mitigate our contribution to global climate change by offsetting our carbon footprint—roughly equivalent to the CO2 emissions of 120 vehicles per year. Here’s what we did.

## Doing our part: Offsetting Asana’s carbon footprint

How does a rapidly growing business offset its carbon footprint?

We began the process by calculating last year’s total energy usage across our offices in San Francisco, New York, and Dublin as well as our carbon footprint from our current data servers with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Not all energy is created equally though, so we did research to determine energy sources (coal, hydro, peat, etc.) in each of those regions in order to do the math on CO2 per Kilowatt hour (kWh).

We then projected our growth for the current year in terms of energy usage and purchased carbon offsets from the Garcia River Project, a reforestation project in Mendocino County, California. This means that we’re offsetting our total carbon footprint from our operations in the U.S., Europe, and all of our AWS servers for the next two years. At the end of each year, we’ll recalculate and purchase more offsets if needed.

Going carbon neutral is just one of the many steps we’re taking to make our planet safer, cleaner, and more sustainable. Earlier this year, Asana achieved the Green Business Innovator Certification, fulfilling requirements set by the City of San Francisco. This includes a range of company-wide activities, from providing commuter benefits to employees and using eco-friendly office supplies to our [zero waste culinary program](https://blog.asana.com/2017/05/asana-culinary-team-reduce-food-waste/) and sustainable purchasing policy. We’re proud to be one of only nine businesses in San Francisco to have achieved this recognition.

## An Earth Day celebration

We’re also happy to celebrate Earth Day this year with a few of our favorite friends: our celebration creatures!

Starting today through the end of the week, you’ll see the unicorn, the yeti, the narwhal, and the phoenix decked out in their finest Earth Day threads. All you have to do is complete a few tasks to see them fly (with zero emissions) across the screen.

## Building a more sustainable future of work

Today, and every day, we’re committed to doing our part to ensuring that our planet thrives—in a sustainable way—for years to come. We hope you enjoy our special celebration creatures and wish your team a Happy Earth Day.
