Engineering Manager, Distributed Data Services

The Distributed Data Services team (a.k.a LunaDb internally) builds, maintains, and scales Asana’s homegrown distributed query backend and distributed caching systems. These systems are responsible for the vast majority of the data that is being served by the Asana application and are used by product engineers to quickly develop product features on top of Asana’s rich work graph in a performant and reliable way. The team’s charter includes the reliability and reactivity components of the data serving layer of Asana, powering our web application, mobile apps, and API. Each day, we combine industry best practices and innovation to support Asana and solve unique problems in the distributed systems that serve our customer's data.
In this role, you will lead and mentor a world-class team of engineers in building software systems to manage Asana’s data-serving infrastructure, deploying and operating our distributed systems, and solving scaling challenges unique to our problem space.
This role is based in our SF office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. Along with most Asanas, you’ll work from this office in person on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you're interviewing for this role, your Talent Acquisition Partner will share more about the in-office requirements.
What You’ll Achieve
- Collaborate with stakeholders to shape strategic roadmap for our data-loading backends, driving impact across engineering teams
- Manage distributed data services team of 5 engineers, including technical lead
- Ensure high availability of Asana's application, help in balancing reliability, velocity, performance, and infrastructure cost
- Identify potential failures and risks, enhancing our architecture to support growth for both Asana and our customers
- Opportunity for driving or contributing to broader organizational health projects beyond your team's scope
About You
- Background in building and operating scalable infrastructure and distributed systems; (preferred) familiarity with cloud infrastructure, especially AWS
- 1-4 years leading engineering teams as a manager or TLM, guiding team planning/execution as well as career and impact growth for your reports
- Blend of intelligence, charisma, integrity, and technical skills to quickly gain trust within the team
- Experience collaborating with other engineering teams, PMs, and cross-functional partners on project alignment and execution
- Focus on maximizing impact, for yourself and your team
- Ability to provide valuable input to any technical or product discussion
- Oriented around the multi-year consequences of your decisions

We believe that compensation should be reflective of the value you create relative to the market value of your role. To ensure pay is fair and not impacted by biases, we're committed to looking at market value which is why we check ourselves and conduct a yearly pay equity audit.
For this role, the estimated base salary range is between $220,000 - $299,000. The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.
In addition to base salary, your compensation package may include additional components such as equity, sales incentive pay (for most sales roles), and benefits.
